After much prayer and discussion, I have decided to continue to join my peers standing in solidarity outside of Gordon’s chapel service. My person goal in being present is not to disrespect chapel or Gordon college, but rather to help give a face to the struggle and individuals affected by Gordon’s life and conduct statement and behavioral standards which prohibit “homosexual practice on or off campus.” Our goal is not to divide, but to help unify, us as a student body in love. It saddens me that our objectives are being misconstrued, but there is always that risk when you allow yourself to be vulnerable and sacrifice things that are important to you (like chapel and meeting the required clw credit) for something you believe in. I will be making myself available to share my personal story involving being raised in the faith and struggling with my sexuality. Hopefully we can start to see that “the gays” are not some far off movement of perverse people who seek to destroy the sanctity of marriage, but rather your neighbors who have deep emotions, faith, and convictions just like you, but with a different cross to bear. Maybe someday the veil of shame in being yourself will be lifted from Gordon College, but until then, come join us standing outside of chapel this morning. Or at the very least, come share your story. (at AJ Gordon Chapel)
